Hand/Upper Extremity Assessment

Hand injuries are a common occurrence; they can be the result of industrial and home accidents, cumulative trauma or repetitive motions, recreational, lifting or carrying activities. Impaired hand function can also be a symptom of specific disease processes or the result of developmental and congenital conditions.

The functional hand/upper extremity assessment provides a clear documentation of a person’s hand/arm mobility, strength, endurance, sensibility, coordination and dexterity, pain thresholds, physical work tolerances and ADL usage.

A person’s mobility and strength is compared to accepted norms. This includes strength norms for age equivalent males/females and selected occupational groups. Comparisons are also made between the injured and non-injured extremity and between the dominant and non-dominant hands. Performance on dexterity tests is compared to that of vocational test standards.
